Swanson Family Scholarship
The Swanson Family Scholarship celebrates student-athletes who excel in sports, academics, and community service. By supporting those with financial need, Roger and Gale Swanson invest in the future of exceptional young leaders.
Basics
- Eligible high school senior attends a OSAA high school in Multnomah, Washington or Clackamas counties. Cannot be a Loprinzi Program High School to verify please check here.
- One $10,000 awarded each year.
- Nonrenewable – the funding will be paid $5,000 per year for a total commitment of $10,000 per student.
- Use for any field of study.
- Use at any 2- or 4-year accredited institution.
- Use funding for tuition, fees, books or technology.
- Application deadline March 1
Criteria
Applicants must:
- Demonstrate financial need to attend college or university. The eligibility for the program is a student aid index (SAI) below 35,000. Exceptions to the SAI threshold can be given in the application process for consideration.
- Participate in competitive athletics – school, club or all-abilities team.
- Engaged in civic involvement and demonstrates leadership in their school and community activities.
- Have a minimum cumulative (unweighted) 3.0 GPA.
- Plan to enroll full time in the upcoming fall term.
Eligibility
Applicants must be:
- Current high school seniors attending a program school
- U.S. Citizens, U.S. Nationals, U.S. Permanent Residents, Refugees or Humanitarian Parolees – based on the guidelines utilized by U.S. Department of Education for Federal Financial Aid eligibility
- Anticipate completion of high school diploma at the time of application.
- Plan to pursue a degree at an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution starting in the fall following their high school graduation.
Applicants may not be:
- Children or dependents of Multnomah Athletic Foundation staff or board of directors.
Application Requirements
Before You Apply
- Read the information below before you start your application so you can be fully prepared.
- You will create a login based on your email address. This will allow you to sign in and out, work on the online application, save a draft and then submit when ready.
- Prepare the answers to the required questions. The application contains eight questions, each with a limit of 300 words, and one essay with a limit of 750 words. Want to be doubly sure you have everything? Find a sample application to see exactly what applying will be like. We only accept electronic applications for the scholarship.
- Self-identification is an important way to honor individuals as we gather data. The identification choices in the application are supplied by the Oregon Health Authority’s Equity and Inclusion Division and the Coalition of the Communities of Color. The information you provide will be kept confidential.
Gather This Information
- A transcript – You will be asked to upload a PDF copy of your transcript.
- School and non-school related clubs and organizations in which you have participated since your freshman year as well as any corresponding leadership positions.
- Honors and awards that you received when participating in school, and non-school related clubs and organizations since your freshman year.
- Volunteer organizations with which you have served, plus any awards and honors that you have received for your participation since freshman year.
- Athletic accomplishments school and non-school based in which you have been involved as well as any awards, honors and leadership positions you have received for your participation since freshman year.
- After you complete the FAFSA / ORSAA, you will receive an email confirming that you have completed the filing. We will accept the email confirmation (PDF format) from the FAFSA with the estimated Student Aid Index (SAI) info. Uploading the FAFSA Submission Summary is no longer a requirement. We will review the circumstance and provide a placeholder for the applicant to upload and/or instruct on situation-specific next steps.
- Two letters of recommendation will be required to submit your application. You may upload a PDF of the letter or invite an individual to provide one through our online application system.
Application Timeline
- Stage 1 High school seniors may apply between December 1 and March 1.
- Stage 2 Six finalists will be notified and be invited to a personal interview in mid-April.
- Stage 3 Announcement of recipients in May.
- Stage 4 The recipients will be honored at a MAF celebration event on June 10.
