Scholarship Shoutout – 2020 Turner Scholarship

Scholarships Graphic

Congratulations to the 2020 Turner Scholarship recipient, Peter Hinnen!

Peter, a full International Diploma candidate, is graduating as a valedictorian from Lincoln High School. He enjoyed also captaining the Lincoln High School boys swim team which was PIL champion all four years that he was on the team.  In other extracurricular adventures he particularly enjoyed the alchemist’s society which met at lunch on Thursdays to do crazy and fun chemistry experiments.

Outside of the classroom and his study desk at home, he has devoted much of his time to the MAC swim team, which he joined when he was 8 years old.  Swimming has taught him an immense amount about self-expectation and pushing through the tough times.  He became able to deal with a disappointing race by analyzing what he could change and thus “OK, next time” became his philosophy rather than despair.

“Peter’s strongest stroke has always been breaststroke, but he has added butterfly as one of his weapons over the last two years.  He has qualified for Futures in the 100 and 200 Breaststroke and made the Oregon High School State final in the 100 Breaststroke.  He is one of the Top 5 Breaststrokers ever to swim for the MAC in the 15-18 age category,” shared head swim coach Tim Larkin.

When he has a little bit of free time, he enjoys playing a wide range of games on his computer with his friends. He is also has explored many of the national parks in the west with his family over the years, in the month when he hasn’t been in swim training.

Peter will be attending Whitman College in Walla Walla,  WA to study in the STEM area and will swim for the Whitman Swim Team.

The Turner Scholarship provides a $1,000 award to an outstanding student athlete who is a member of the MAC Swim team. The scholarship is made possible by Dr. and Mrs. Turner.
