The Multnomah Athletic Foundation (MAF) is proud to commemorate Juneteenth by shining a spotlight on our remarkable grant partners who are making a significant difference in the lives of underserved and underrepresented youth. As we celebrate Juneteenth and the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, it is essential to recognize the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in providing access to education and athletics. These grant partner organizations, HOLLA, Elevate Oregon, Big Yard Foundation, KairosPDX, and Friends of Baseball, are committed to serving black and brown youth and are led by culturally representative leaders who truly understand the unique needs and challenges faced by these students.
Diversity, equity, and inclusion lie at the core of our values at MAF. We firmly believe that every young person, regardless of their background, should have equal opportunities to thrive in both education and athletics. Representation matters, as it fosters a sense of belonging, inspires confidence, and encourages youth to embrace their full potential.
HOLLA is a mentorship movement that connects with families, administrators, teachers, and nonprofits to recognize the power and potential of Black and Brown youth. Their mission is to change the narrative of youth of color through culturally responsive relationships. By providing a safe and supportive space, HOLLA empowers students to explore their passions including sports and break barriers, fostering a new generation of trailblazers.
Elevate Oregon, based in the Parkrose community, is a beacon of hope for many at-risk youths, providing them with mentorship, academic support, and athletic opportunities. Their holistic approach emphasizes character development, cultivating resilience, and nurturing talents, giving these students the tools, they need to succeed academically, athletically, and in life.
The Big Yard Foundation, dedicated to creating pathways to success for black and brown youth, combines education, sports, and mentorship to transform lives. By equipping students with valuable life skills, instilling a strong work ethic, and fostering a sense of community, they empower the next generation to become leaders who will positively impact their communities.
KairosPDX recognizes the importance of early education in building a strong foundation for success. This organization focuses on eliminating racial disparities in education by providing culturally responsive learning environments, comprehensive support services including structured play, and empowering parents as advocates for their children’s education. Through their innovative approach, KairosPDX nurtures the unique brilliance in each child and prepares them for a brighter future.
Friends of Baseball believes that baseball is a powerful tool for positive change. By introducing the sport to underserved communities and promoting racial and gender equity, Friends of Baseball fosters teamwork, resilience, and leadership skills. They ensure that all young people, regardless of their background, have access to the transformative power of baseball and all the opportunities it brings.
We encourage you to support these incredible organizations directly. By contributing your time, resources, or financial support, you can help them continue their vital work in transforming the lives of black and brown youth in our community.
